Sweden indicts two people for spying for Russia

Swedish prosecutors on November 11 charged two brothers with aggravated espionage on behalf of Russia, saying the alleged crime could be harmful to the country's security.

The men, aged 42 and 35, have been detained since last year and have previously denied all charges.

Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter has reported, citing sources, that one of the men previously worked in some of Sweden's most important intelligence agencies.

"The suspicion concerns very serious criminality directed against the Swedish intelligence and security system. The criminal offense is serious as it concerns circumstances of great importance," the Swedish Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

"The information that has been received, transmitted and disclosed could result in harm to the security of Sweden, from the fact that it comes into the hands of a foreign power," he said, adding that most parts of the criminal investigation are confidential./REL
