The ship with 230 migrants anchors in the French port

A rescue ship carrying 230 migrants docked in the French port of Toulon on Friday, maritime authorities said, amid a dispute between France and Italy over which country is responsible for them.

The Ocean Viking, a vessel operated by a French non-governmental organization, had picked up the migrants at sea off the coast of Libya before they spent weeks searching for a port to accept them.

The ship docked at 8:50 am.

France had never before allowed a rescue ship carrying migrants to land on its coast, but this time it did so because Italy had refused entry.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Thursday that the migrants were Italy's responsibility under EU rules and that the French move was an "extraordinary" measure that would not affect future actions.

He said that Italy's refusal to accept migrants was "incomprehensible" and that it would have "serious consequences" for Italy's bilateral relations with France and with the EU as a whole./REL
