Trump hosts South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung for a meeting today

President Trump is scheduled to meet this Monday with South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung.

The summit at the White House is expected to focus on trade and defense issues.

Trump is expected to greet the South Korean president at noon local time, and a meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for the afternoon.

Lee Jae-Myung said over the weekend that he would raise a full range of issues related to North Korea with President Trump, including the need for diplomatic engagement. Pyongyang continues to insist that it has no interest in dialogue with Seoul or Washington.

The Trump administration is calling for the modernization of the 71-year-old US-South Korea alliance, forged after the Korean War.

The US has about 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea. For nearly two decades, the US has called for "strategic flexibility" to deploy them to address security challenges away from the Korean Peninsula.
