Zelensky vows Ukraine will "not lose" war against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Ukraine's Independence Day that his country "will not lose" the war against Moscow, as Russian forces make advances on the battlefield and diplomatic efforts are underway to end the war that began more than three years ago.

"Ukraine has not yet won, but it certainly will not lose," Zelensky said during his address to the nation on August 24.

The Ukrainian president added that despite parts of his country currently being occupied by Russian forces, there is "only one Ukraine" and "we must be together as one family."

Zelensky referred to diplomacy with Russia at a time when US President Donald Trump is repeating calls for peace talks to end the war.

"Ukraine will never again accept the humiliation of what the Russians call 'compromise,'" he said. "We need a just peace in which we will decide our future."

On August 24, Ukraine is marking its independence from the Soviet Union, as the country faces a new reality both on the battlefield and beyond.

Russia said on August 23 that its forces in eastern Ukraine had taken control of two villages in the Donetsk region, while the Ukrainian military said its forces had recaptured a settlement on the western edge of the Dnipropetrovsk region. Moscow also announced it had extinguished a fire at a nuclear power plant in the western Kursk region after Russian air defenses claimed to have shot down a Ukrainian drone.

This month has also seen intense diplomatic efforts to end the war, including a high-profile summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

This was followed by talks at the White House between Trump, Zelensky and European leaders.

Trump has hinted at a possible meeting between Zelensky and Putin, but such a meeting has not yet taken place. The US leader has said he will wait two weeks to see what happens and then decide on next steps, which could include new sanctions on Russia./ Rel
