At least nine killed in an Israeli attack in Lebanon

At least nine people have been killed and five others wounded after an Israeli strike hit a residential building in the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh, state news agency NNA said on August 17.

The Israeli military said the strike targeted a weapons depot used by fighters from Hezbollah, the Lebanese group designated a terrorist organization by the United States.

Tensions have risen in recent weeks in the Middle East region after a rocket attack blamed on Hezbollah killed 12 young men in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israel retaliated by killing a senior Hezbollah commander during an attack on the outskirts of Beirut. Hezbollah has vowed to take revenge on Israel for the assassination in Iran of Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union.

Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged fire on the border on an almost daily basis since the war in Gaza began on October 7 between Israel and Hamas.

As a result of cross-border violence, 579 people have been killed in Lebanon, most of them Hezbollah fighters, but also at least 121 civilians, according to data from the AFP agency.
