Russia claims Ukraine used Western missiles to destroy a bridge in the Kursk

Russia's Foreign Ministry said Ukraine had used Western missiles, likely US-made HIMARS missiles, to destroy a bridge over the Seym River in the Kursk region and kill volunteers trying to evacuate civilians.

"For the first time, the Kursk region was hit by Western-made missile launchers, possibly American HIMARS," Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, said late Friday on the Telegram messaging app.

"As a result of the attack, the bridge over the Seym River in the Glushkovo district was completely destroyed and the volunteers who were helping the civilian population to evacuate were killed," she wrote.

The bridge is said to have been a logistical "bottleneck", used to send equipment to the front lines of the fighting.

Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Friday that Kiev's forces were advancing between one and three kilometers in some areas in the Kursk region, 11 days after the start of an operation in Russia.

Kiev claims to have taken control of 82 settlements in an area of ??1,150 square kilometers in Russia's Kursk region since August 6.

The Reuters news agency could not independently verify the parties' claims about developments on the battlefield.

Russia has accused the West of supporting and encouraging Ukraine's first ground offensive on Russian territory and said a "terrorist occupation" of Kiev would not change the course of the war.

The United States, which has said it cannot allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to win the war in Ukraine, which he launched in February 2022, has so far portrayed Ukraine's surprise attack as a defensive move that justifies the use of weapons sent by the United States, officials in Washington said./ Voa
