Hundreds evacuated in Turkey as a result of fires

Firefighters are battling wildfires in Turkey's Izmir for a third straight day, as Turkish media and officials said hundreds more people were evacuated overnight.

Airborne helicopters and other ground-based firefighting equipment have been involved in efforts to extinguish the fires, which, as a result of strong winds, continued to spread on the morning of August 17.

Tornadoes started on Thursday and quickly spread to residential areas, due to strong winds that reached up to 50 kilometers per hour.

Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said 900 residents in the five affected counties were evacuated overnight in Izmir.

"Currently, two planes and 11 helicopters are continuing the intervention", said the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumakli, adding that the residents of the city of Izmir should not "worry".

About 1,600 hectares of land were affected by the fires, the minister said.

Another six fires are active in forest areas in other cities in Turkey, authorities said.

Scientists have said that climate change is causing extreme weather, including heat waves, to last longer and be more intense./ Rel
