Dangerous winter storms sweep across the United States

A winter storm of snow and strong winds battered the United States from coast to coast, paralyzing roads and blacking out nearly 1 million homes and businesses.

The National Weather Service warned of a "cold and dangerous winter storm" through Saturday. Up to 1.5 meters of snow could fall on some mountains near Los Angeles, posing an avalanche risk.

As a result of the storm, interstate highways from Arizona to Wyoming were closed, drivers were trapped in their cars and there were power outages for hundreds of thousands of citizens and families.
