Hope for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza

Israeli media reported on Sunday that mediators are making progress on reaching a weeks-long ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the release of hostages being held in Gaza and Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. The Israeli war cabinet met on Saturday to discuss the proposal, but there was no official announcement about what had been decided.

A number of Israeli media outlets, which cited officials without identifying them, said the cabinet had technically approved the deal and that Israel would send a delegation to Qatar for further talks.

Hamas says it is not yet included in the latest proposal drawn up by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, but the announced content of the agreement broadly matches previous demands for the first phase of the ceasefire. Hamas's top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was in Cairo last week.

Israel, meanwhile, is planning to expand its offensive to the southern town of Rafah, on the border between Gaza and Egypt, where more than half of its population of 2.3 million has been displaced.

Humanitarian organizations have warned that the offensive would be a disaster for displaced residents. The United States and other allies have called on Israel to avoid harming civilians.

Heavy attacks continued on Sunday in northern Gaza. Residents reported fierce fighting in the Zaytoun neighborhood, in Gaza City./ VOA
