The White House said on Thursday that the US has evidence that Iranian troops are "directly engaged on the ground" in Crimea, supporting Russia's drone attacks on infrastructure and civilian populations in Ukraine.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters that Iran has sent a "relatively small number" of military personnel to Crimea to help Russian troops launch Iranian-made drones. In 2014, in violation of international law, Russia annexed Crimea, a territory of Ukraine.
