Lack of physical activity has disastrous consequences. The World Health Organization has warned that nearly 500 million people could become ill within ten years. The situation in Germany is particularly dramatic.

Heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, dementia - nearly 500 million people worldwide are expected to be affected by these and other diseases in the years 2020-2030, reports the World Health Organization (WHO) in the "World Physical Activity Report 2022" ". And this is mainly for one reason: because they do not do enough physical activity.

A minimum of two and a half hours per week is recommended

Germany scores poorly above average: 44 percent of women and 40 percent of men over the age of 18 should be more active, according to the WHO. The situation is particularly worrying among young people in Germany: 88 percent of girls and 80 percent of boys do not do enough physical activity. The corona pandemic has further accelerated the trend towards laziness in physical activity, says the WHO, which is urging member countries to do more - for example to improve bike paths and pedestrian routes in cities.

If nothing changes, treating people around the world who have become ill just from lack of physical activity will cost about $300 billion by 2030. A WHO expert said in Geneva that this money could be used to train 100 million doctors./ DW
