Outgoing Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov has urged Russia to keep diplomatic channels open between the two countries and called on Russia to issue a diplomatic ultimatum after Sofia expelled 70 members of the Russian diplomatic corps.

Bulgaria, an EU and NATO member, announced on Tuesday that it was infiltrating 70 Russian diplomats amid espionage concerns.

Relations of once close allies have been severed with the start of the war in Ukraine, reports Skynews.


According to the Foreign Ministry, Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova asked Sofia to annul her decision by noon on Friday, otherwise she would ask Moscow to consider the full closure of the Russian embassy in Sofia.

Following Russia's condition on Bulgaria, Petkov urged Russia to keep diplomatic channels between Moscow and Sofia open, despite infiltrations.

He explained that after 70 deportations, Russia will have 43 diplomatic staff in Sofia, compared to only 12 in Bulgaria.

"We ask the embassy of the Russian Federation to withdraw the diplomatic message it sent today. "For the sake of the past and for the sake of the future, we must be able to take steps forward with mutual respect," said the Bulgarian Prime Minister./ CNA.al
