Greece has sent an official request to the United States for the purchase of 20 F-35 fighter jets from the American company Lockheed Martin. The news was announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who expressed the need to strengthen the country's defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions with neighboring Turkey.

"Part of this procedure is the sending of the Letter of Request, which has occurred in recent days," Mitsotakis said, stressing this was the start of a lengthy process and that Athens estimated it would not take delivery of the aircraft before 2027 or 2028 .

"Pjesë e kësaj procedure është dërgimi i kërkesës zyrtare, që ka ndodhur ditët e fundit," tha Mitsotakis, duke theksuar se ky ishte fillimi i një procesi të gjatë dhe se Athina vlerësoi se nuk do të merrte dorëzimin e avionit përpara vitit 2027 ose 2028.

Zyrtarët grekë thanë se një skuadron do të përbëhet nga 20 avionë.
