The Georgian region of South Ossetia is in talks to join Russia

South Ossetia, a region that broke away from Georgia and calls itself an independent state, has held talks with Russian officials about becoming part of Russia, Russian news agency RIA reported on Sunday.

Russia recognized South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia, as independent states in 2008 after Russian troops prevented Georgia from retaking control of the two regions in a five-day war that year.

But the West accused Russia of annexing South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and Tbilisi continues to demand that these two regions be returned to it.

"We are discussing all these issues in close coordination with Russia, taking into account our bilateral relations and treaties," said Alan Alborov, the speaker of South Ossetia's parliament, when asked if a referendum could be held. to become part of Russia, according to RIA.

The Russian-backed leader of South Ossetia, Alan Gagloev, said last year that he hoped the region could officially become part of Russia, RIA said.

South Ossetia broke away from Georgia after a 1991-92 war in which several thousand people died. It maintains close ties with the neighboring Russian region of North Ossetia.

Almost the majority of the population of South Ossetia have accepted the Russian passport. They also use the Russian ruble as their own currency and their economy depends on Russia./ Rel
