Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has been appointed prime minister, a position traditionally held by the king.

Prince Mohammed, who has been considered the de facto leader of the state for years, previously served as deputy prime minister under King Salman, as well as defense minister.

The position of Minister of Defense has now been taken by his younger brother, Khalid bin Salman, who previously served as Deputy Minister of Defense.

Other important ministries, including the foreign and energy ministries, continue to have the same leaders, according to a decree by King Salman, which was published by the official Saudi Arabian news agency.

Prince Mohammed, who turns 37 this month, is first in line to assume the position of king.

He became Minister of Defense in 2015, a major step towards consolidating power.

Saudi Arabia does not publicly comment on speculation about the health of 86-year-old King Salman.

He has led Saudi Arabia - the world's leading oil exporter - since 2015.

In 2017, he denied reports that he planned to abdicate the throne so that Prince Mohammed could take over.

King Salman has been hospitalized twice this year./rel
