Enriko Leta resigns/ We need a new PD, I will no longer run for president

Enrico Letta has announced his resignation as head of the Democratic Party in Italy, after losing the elections to the far-right coalition led by Giorgia Meloni.

In a statement to the media, Enrico Leta said: 

"Difficult days await us for Italy. If we came to the Meloni government it is because of Giuseppe Conte, who overthrew the government and was the trigger. We will oppose with all our strength and we will not allow Italy to break away from European values and from the deep elements of the Constitution. The result? Unsatisfactory. We tried, but it was not enough. We need a new DP. I will not run for president again."
