Colombian President Petro: I survived a helicopter assassination plot

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said he survived an assassination attempt while traveling by helicopter with his daughters, after months of warnings about an alleged plot by drug traffickers targeting him.

Petro said his helicopter could not land at a destination on Colombia's Caribbean coast because he was afraid people would shoot at it.

"Last night I couldn't sit down because they informed me that they were going to shoot at the helicopter where I was with my daughters," Petro said.

He added that the lights where he had planned to sit did not come on, forcing him to change his travel plan due to threats to his safety.

Petro had previously reported another alleged assassination attempt in 2024 and claimed that a drug cartel had been intent on eliminating him since he took office in August 2022.

The incident came as Colombia faces a wave of violence ahead of presidential elections, where Petro is constitutionally barred from running for a second term. /CNA
