Police take action against online hate

Police have intervened this morning across Germany against online hate speech and incitement to hate. As the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) in Wiesbaden announced, there were a total of around 130 "police measures", such as searches and interrogations.

The day of action, which targets the authors of illegal posts, took place for the ninth time.

BKA clarified on this topic: " Incitement to crime, threat, coercion or incitement of hatred on the Internet are offenses punishable by imprisonment of up to five years".

Lots of hate mail in previous years

According to the data, in 2022 the police recorded almost 3,400 cases of hate mail - last year there were still around 2,410.

In addition, many criminally punishable posts go unreported, the BKA said. These are reported only to network operators or expressed in closed conversations. It can therefore be assumed that there is a large gray area.

Hate and hate speech on the Internet is a fertile ground for radicalization and a source of inspiration for acts of violence.

People's help

In connection with the arrests in Hamburg, the police are asking for the public's help to fight hate and hate speech online. Anyone who finds or experiences hate mail online should report it to the police. Also, hate messages should be reported to social media providers, as they are obliged, according to the police, to remove objectionable content./ DW
