The EP bans diesel and gasoline cars from 2035

2023-02-14 17:44:00, Kosova & Bota CNA

The European Parliament has officially approved the law banning the sale of new diesel and gasoline cars in the European Union starting in 2035. This decision aims to accelerate the use of electric cars to fight climate change.

The new law will require, from 2025, car companies to cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 100 percent for the new cars they sell. This will prevent new cars running on fossil fuels in the 27 countries of the European bloc.

The approved law also envisages a 55 percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions for new cars from 2023 compared to 2021 levels.

"The operating costs of electric cars are already lower than the costs of a vehicle with an internal combustion engine," said Jan Huitema, the EP's main negotiator for this decision. He said that this law will enable electric cars to be cheaper for consumers.

EU states agreed to this agreement in October last year, but the law must receive official approval in order to enter into force. The final approval is expected to happen in March./REL
