Through a report, the members of the European Parliament have expressed regret for the delay that Montenegro has made on the path to EU integration as a result of the internal political crisis.
The MEPs also expressed concern about attempts at malicious intervention from abroad, especially coming from Russia, China and Serbia.
The report on Montenegro was approved in the EP Foreign Policy Committee with 51 votes in favor, three against and eight abstentions.
The report stated that European legislators welcome the continuation of Montenegro's commitment to EU integration and the high level of public support for this.
"The MEPs state that the failure to build consensus on issues of national interest and the lack of inter-party dialogue have delayed progress in European reforms and turned Montenegro into a deep institutional and political crisis," the release said. by the EP after the approval of the report.
MEPs have welcomed the complete adaptation that Montenegro has made to the EU's foreign policy, including the imposition of sanctions against Moscow due to the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The report was compiled by the Croatian MP, Tonino Picula, who said that this report, which is the last in this term of the European Parliament, proves a long delay in Montenegro's journey towards the EU and the existence of a crisis of deeply political in this country.
"The MPs expect the formation of a pro-European government as soon as possible, a Government which clearly and without doubts supports European policies and values, in accordance with the expectations of the significant majority of the citizens of this country", said Picula, who is rapporteur in the EP for Montenegro.
Montenegro is regarded as a leader in the Western Balkans in terms of the EU membership process. This country has been a candidate since 2010, and in 2012 opened membership talks with Brussels.
