Nine European countries support Ukraine's membership in NATO

Nine Central and Eastern European countries have offered their support for Ukraine to become a member of NATO, and have called on the alliance to provide more weapons to Kiev in order to defend itself against Russian occupation forces.

The statement issued on October 2 was signed by the leaders of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

The joint statement of these nine countries comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on September 30 that Ukraine has submitted its application for NATO membership through the accelerated procedure.

“Ne përsërisim mbështetjen tonë për sovranitetin dhe integritetin territorial të Ukrainëës. Ne nuk njohim dhe nuk do të njohim kurrë përpjekjet ruse për të aneksuar territor ukrainas”, u tha në deklaratën e nëntë liderëve të shteteve të Evropës Qendrore dhe Lindore.

Deklarata e Putinit se Rusia ka aneksuar rajonet e Donjeckut, Luhanskut, Hersonit dhe Zaporizhjës, u pa si përshkallëzim i madh nga ana e Kremlinit.

I pyetur për kërkesën e Ukrainës për t’u anëtarësuar në NATO, sekretari i Përgjithshëm i Aleancës, Jens Stoltenberg, tha për një televizion amerikan se “çdo vendim për anëtarësim duhet të merret me konsensus dhe se të 30-të aleatët duhet të pajtohen që të merret një vendim i tillë”.

Stoltenberg tha po ashtu se rimarrja e kontrollit të qytetit të Limanit nga forcat ukrainase – qytet që gjendet në Donjeck – është dëshmi se ukrainasit po bëjnë përparim dhe janë në gjendje të dëbojnë nga territori forcat ruse.

"We have seen that they were able to take a new city, Liman, and this fact proves that the Ukrainians are making progress, they are able to drive out the Russian forces because of their courage, because of their bravery and skills and of course because of the advanced weapons that the United States and other allies are providing," Stoltenberg said during an interview with NBC.

According to him, the best way to oppose the Russian claim for the annexation of parts of Ukraine is to continue supporting the Government in Kiev.

Meanwhile, on October 2, the German Minister of Defense, Christine Lambrecht, announced that next year 16 howitzers produced in Slovakia will be sent to Ukraine. These weapons will be financed by Denmark, Norway and Germany./ VOA
