EU Foreign Ministers: More pressure on Russia

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Cyprus to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.

At the center of the discussions is, among other things, the question of whether and how the EU can engage more strongly in diplomatic efforts to end Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine.

So far, talks with Moscow have been led mainly by US President Donald Trump and his envoys.

Kallas: More pressure on Russia

The spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, announced that the aim is to increase international pressure on Russia. This is also a consequence of the recent attacks on Kiev and threats against the EU.

A special envoy for Ukraine is not expected to be a topic of discussion in Cyprus. The EU, for now, does not plan to appoint a chief negotiator for possible peace talks with Russia.

Such a step is not currently seen as beneficial by Kallas and leading EU states such as Germany, several senior EU officials and diplomats have told the dpa news agency.

First, it is said that we should discuss strategic issues, not individuals. "We need to agree on what we want to talk about with Russia," said an EU official.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Finnish President Alexander Stubb have recently been mentioned as possible candidates for negotiation. The name of former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi has also been discussed.

Talks with Saudi Arabia and India

Regarding the Middle East, the focus will be particularly on the war with Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, important for the transport of gas and oil. Representatives from India and Saudi Arabia have also been invited to the consultations. /DW
