Gold bars worth $40 million found in former government official's home

A former senior US government official has been arrested by the FBI after hundreds of gold bars worth over $40 million, as well as millions of dollars in cash and dozens of luxury watches, were discovered at his Virginia home.

According to court documents, David Rush is charged with theft of public funds and fraud against US government institutions. Investigators said that during the search of his apartment, 303 gold bars, each weighing about one kilogram, were seized, with a total value exceeding $40 million based on the current price of gold.

In addition to the gold, FBI agents also found about $2 million in cash, as well as 35 luxury watches, most of them Rolex.

According to US media, Rush previously held a senior position in the CIA and had access to highly classified information. Court documents show that he made several requests to the US government to receive foreign currency and gold bullion, claiming that they would be used for work-related expenses.

However, during an internal investigation, the CIA was unable to find any documentation justifying the use or destination of these assets. After the CIA referred the case, the FBI launched an investigation and executed the search warrant on May 18.

Rush is also accused of lying about his education and military service when applying for his government position, as well as of receiving illegal financial benefits from military payments.

He is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court this week. The CIA and FBI have confirmed the investigations, while Rush's lawyer has declined to comment on the matter./ CNA
