Among the hundreds of protesters arrested by the Iranian regime during the protests that have been going on since September in this country, there are also 40 foreign nationals.

This was announced by the spokesman of the Iranian judiciary, Masoud Setayeshi, to the state news agency, IRNA, on Tuesday.

Setayeshi, according to the IRNA agency, said that Iran's enemies want to create a "black and sharp image, full of chaos and uncertainty" of the country.

Since protests began in mid-September, more than 300 protesters in Iran have died, including more than 40 children, according to the UN human rights office. Other human rights activists say that the number of dead exceeds the figure of 430 people, while around 17,500 protesters have been arrested.

Protests against Iran's clerical establishment erupted two months ago after the death in custody of a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by morality police for allegedly violating hijab rules.

Authorities say Mahsa Amini died of a heart attack, but her family and other Iranians believe she died as a result of a police beating./ REL
