More than one billion people are living with obesity worldwide, according to the latest findings published in the scientific journal "Lancet".

These figures include about 880 million young people and 159 million children, according to 2022 data.

The highest figure is in Tonga, where 70-80 percent of young people live with obesity.

International teams of scientists have said there is an urgent need for massive changes in the way obesity is tackled.

Obesity can increase the risk of developing many serious health conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.

Among the main findings of the report are that:

The United States ranks 10th in the world for obesity among men and 36th among women.
India ranks 19th from the bottom for obesity among women and 21st among men.
Senior researcher, Professor Majid Ezzati, from Imperial College London, told the British broadcaster "BBC" that "in many of these countries, there are two options, access to healthy food and unhealthy food".

"In some cases we have seen aggressive marketing campaigns, promoting unhealthy foods, while the price and access to healthy foods may be more problematic."

In a comparison between 1990 and 2022, it was found that obesity rates have quadrupled among children and adolescents.

As for adults, the rate is more than twice as high in women and almost three times as high in men.

Meanwhile, the percentage of adults who are considered underweight has dropped by 50 percent, but researchers have said that even this point is problematic, especially in poor countries.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has said that "this new study shows the importance of preventing and managing obesity from an early age through diets, physical activity and adequate care".

The network of over 1,500 researchers has collaborated with the WHO, and has analyzed the height and weight of about 220 million people over the age of five./ REL
