From 6 am on March 22 and for 24 hours all shops and services are closed. From the airport, to supermarkets, bars, even ATMs. 

Horns on the streets, music in shops, noise from construction sites stopped today in Bali, while the island celebrates the day of silence which occurs every year on the same date.

It is essentially the celebration of the Balinese New Year, known as Nyepi, during which tradition calls for residents, as well as tourists, to stay indoors for a peaceful day of self-reflection. 

Also, the residents and visitors of the island every year on the same day cannot have fun, do not work, do not go out and try to avoid even artificial light. 

Pecalang, a Balinese security group, patrols the streets to ensure that everyone - including tourists - respects./Adapted from CNA.al
