Kosovo in line with the US, expands the list of foreign terrorist organizations

Through a decree, Kosovo's president, Vjosa Osmani, has harmonized the country's list of foreign terrorist organizations with that of the United States.

Among the organizations added to the list are cartels, but also Ansar Allah from Yemen, or the Houthi rebels.

President Osmani said that Kosovo stands by the US in the fight against transnational organized crime and terrorism, drug cartels and criminal regimes "because American leadership makes the world safer."

"History shows a simple truth: when America leads, there is more peace, more security, and more freedom globally. Kosovo will always stand by the US to advance this vision and in the effort to combat all those who threaten the national security of our most important ally," Osmani wrote.

The decree mentions two executive orders issued by Trump in January of this year. Through these orders, Trump placed a number of cartels, as well as other groups, on the list of foreign terrorist organizations.

Which organizations and cartels are in question?
On January 20, he issued an executive order to add to the list of foreign terrorist organizations: Cártel del Golfo, Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, Cártel de Sinaloa, Cártel del Noreste, Carteles Unidos, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), and Tren de Aragua.

Meanwhile, through an order on January 22, the US again declared Ansar Allah, or the Houthi rebels in Yemen, a terrorist organization. This group is supported by Iran.

During his first presidential term, Trump had declared the Houthi rebels a foreign terrorist organization, but that decision was overturned by the Joe Biden administration due to concerns that doing so could hinder the delivery of necessary aid to Yemen.

In the past, Kosovo has also harmonized its lists of terrorist organizations with those declared by the US. It took such a step in 2020, when it declared Lebanon's Hezbollah a terrorist organization./ REL
