ISIS planned to assassinate Pope Francis/ Assassination plot revealed

ISIS militants had planned to assassinate Pope Francis during a visit to Trieste a year ago, according to an investigation published by Il Picolo.

On July 7, 2024, Pope Francis paid a visit to Trieste on the occasion of the closing of the 50th Social Week of Catholics in Italy.

The day before the visit, a gun was found in a dark cart abandoned in the train station's grass.

According to the newspaper, in the investigation documents referring to "intelligence" checks on the weapon, a "possible assassination project against the Holy Father" is mentioned.

Interpol arrested one of the suspects in the Netherlands, a Turkish citizen, Hasan Uzun, 46. He is now in prison in Trieste.

The arrested man is suspected of being connected to the weapon found inside the cart. It is a CZ model 7B automatic, 9 Luger caliber, with serial number 5793N, and a magazine.

There was ammunition there: 14 rounds. According to investigations, cited by Il Picolo, the attack was planned by a Turkish organization linked to ISIS.

After being extradited from the Netherlands, Hasan Uzun spent several days in prison in Milan and is now in an isolation cell in Trieste.
