North Korea warns residents of "extreme weather"

North Korean authorities have warned of extreme weather as the cold sweeps through the Korean Peninsula.

Temperatures are expected to drop below -30 degrees Celsius in the northern regions, at the same time the poorest areas of the state, the state radio broadcasted.

Coastal areas are expected to face strong winds.

South Korea has also issued a similar warning, while in northern China temperatures have fallen to record levels.

Japan is expected to face a similar situation in the coming days.

Radio Free Asia reported in December last year that "a large number of people" had disappeared during the extreme weather - most of them believed to have died from the cold, or difficulties in securing food in such conditions. .

The food crisis in North Korea is believed to be the worst since the 1990s.

In 2019, the United Nations said up to 10 million North Koreans were "in urgent need of food", following reports that many were surviving on just 300 grams of food a day.

In 2020, North Korea has been hit by five powerful typhoons, which have caused extensive damage to buildings, roads, factories and water systems.

Scientists believe that extreme weather is becoming more frequent due to climate change./REL
