North Korea, hypersonic missile test

North Korea said its latest test was of new medium-range hypersonic missiles, which are designed to hit targets in the far Pacific. Leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to further expand his arsenal of nuclear-capable weapons to counter rival countries.

There are concerns that its military capabilities could be further advanced through the transfer of technology from Russia, as the two countries coordinate actions on the war in Ukraine. North Korean leader Kim reiterated that the nuclear drive is aimed at countering threats from hostile forces, but did not directly mention the United States.

The announcement on North Korean state media came after South Korea's military said yesterday that it had ordered the launch of the missile, which traveled a distance of 1,100 kilometers before crashing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. This missile test, made just weeks before Donald Trump is reinstated as president of the United States, followed a year of multiple missile tests.
