The US Congress is close to approving long-awaited aid to Ukraine and Israel

After several months of delay, the House of Representatives will vote on tens of billions of dollars in US military aid to Ukraine and Israel.

Both measures have vocal opponents in Congress, and their hopes for passage depend on a bipartisan coalition to overcome legislative hurdles.

Debate and voting are expected to begin on Saturday.

House Speaker Mike Johnson's foreign aid proposal is $60.8 billion for Ukraine, $26.4 billion for Israel and $8.1 billion for the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan.

Left-wing Democrats who oppose Israel's handling of the war in Gaza have said they will not allow the US to continue to be complicit in a human rights catastrophe.

But the Israel aid bill contains $9 billion in humanitarian aid, which could help win over some reluctant Democrats./ CNA
