Explosion at a military base in Iraq/ One victim and several injured

One person was killed and eight others were injured in an explosion at a military base in Iraq, where pro-Iranian armed groups are stationed.

Full details remain unclear about the blast that hit the Kalsu base in Babylon province, south of Baghdad, which is also home to the regular army, police and members of the Popular Mobilization Forces of Iraq, or Hashed al-Shaabi.

The blast came days after Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, with hundreds of drones and missiles. It also happened after an attack on Iran, reportedly carried out by Israel on April 19.

Iraqi security forces said "explosion and fire" hit the Kalsu base in the early hours of Saturday, killing one person and injuring eight others.

The air defense command did not report any "drones or fighter jets in the airspace in Babylon province before or during the explosion," the statement said.

No one has yet claimed responsibility.

Shortly after the blast, the US military said its forces were not behind the attacks in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said it does not comment on "information published in foreign media".

The Hashed al-Shaabi group said the explosion caused casualties, but did not give an exact number.

Meanwhile, an Iraqi military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the explosion hit "warehouses where equipment was stored".

The Hashed al-Shaabi group is an integral part of Iraq's security apparatus and operates under the authority of the prime minister.

This group gathers around itself armed pro-Iranian factions, some of which have carried out several attacks in Iraq and Syria against US forces.

This group vowed that whoever is behind the attack will be punished./ Rel
