China warns of "targeted military operations" around Taiwan

China's military has been put on high alert and will launch "targeted military operations" in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the Chinese Ministry of Defense said on the evening of August 2.

In a separate announcement, China's People's Army's Eastern Command said it will hold joint military operations near Taiwan on Tuesday night.

The military exercises will include air and naval exercises in the north and southeast of Taiwan.

China's Defense Ministry did not provide details on what the targeted military operations would involve, or whether they were separate from exercises announced by the Eastern Command.

Earlier, state news agency Xinhua reported that the Chinese military will hold five-day exercises around Taiwan from August 4 to 7.

Upon arriving in Taiwan, Pelosi said that US solidarity with the Taiwanese people is more important than ever.

Her visit has raised tensions between Beijing and Washington, as China has said that Pelosi's visit "seriously infringes on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity".
