Imports of Russian oil from China, the highest since the beginning of the war in

Last month, imports of Russian oil from China reached the highest level since Moscow's aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, according to Beijing customs data released on Tuesday.

China imported 9.71 million tons of oil from Russia in May, according to detailed customs data, up from 5.4 million tons in February 2022 and 6.3 million tons in March.

The figures show that Russian oil imports from China have almost doubled since Russia's attack on Ukraine. The data is in line with trade figures released this month, which showed China's trade with Russia grew to levels not seen since February 2022.

Last month trade between the two countries was $20.5 billion, according to data from Beijing, while Chinese imports from Russia reached $11.3 billion.

China is Russia's largest trading partner. Trade between the two countries reached a record $190 billion last year, according to Beijing customs data.

During a meeting in March, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian leader Vladimir Putin pledged to increase trade to $200 billion by 2023, while hailing their "borderless" partnership. Russian energy shipments to China are expected to increase by 40% this year, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said last month.

Beijing says it is a neutral party in the Ukraine war, but has been criticized by Western countries for refusing to condemn Moscow and for its close strategic partnership with Russia./ VOA
