The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has said his office will "further intensify its efforts to advance its investigations" in the occupied Palestinian territories, Sky News reports.

His comment came after he visited the region for the first time since his appointment.

There have been widespread allegations of violations of international law by Hamas and Israeli forces since the outbreak of the conflict.

Prosecutor Karim Khan said he witnessed "scenes of calculated cruelty" at the sites of the October 7 attacks and his prosecutors are working "to hold those responsible to account."

He also visited Palestinian officials in Ramallah, including President Mahmoud Abbas, and expressed "deep concern" over what he called "a significant increase in incidents of attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank."

He called for an immediate halt to such attacks and said his office "continues to investigate these incidents with focus and urgency."

The Hague-based court has been investigating crimes in the Palestinian territories committed by both sides since 2021, but has yet to announce any charges.

Israel is not a member state of the court and does not recognize its jurisdiction./ CNA
