The Italian journalist is arrested in Tehran

The Foreign Ministry of Italy announced that the journalist Cecilia Sala, who was in Iran to carry out her "journalistic activity", has been arrested by the police in Tehran.

The ministry said in a statement on Friday that Sala, who has a podcast called "Stories" about life in countries around the world, was arrested on December 19.

She did not reveal the reason for her arrest, but said that the Italian ambassador in Tehran visited her "to verify the conditions and condition of Sala in detention".

"The family was informed about the result of the consular visit. Sala had the opportunity to make two phone calls to his relatives", said the Italian Ministry.

Sala posted a podcast from Tehran on December 17 about the patriarchy in the Iranian capital.

Iran is regularly accused of arresting dual nationals and Western citizens on false charges in order to use them to pressure Western countries.

Earlier this month, Reza Valizadeh, an American-Iranian citizen and former journalist for Radio Free Europe's Radio Farda, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Tehran's Revolutionary Court for allegedly "collaborating with a hostile government."

Valizadeh resigned from Radio Farda in November 2022, after a decade of work.

He returned to Iran in early 2024 to visit his family, but was arrested on September 22.

In his two court hearings, held on November 20 and December 7, it is reported that representatives of the prosecution were absent, and their role was taken over by the judge himself.

Sources close to the journalist claim that he fell into the "security trap", despite receiving unofficial assurances from Iranian security officials that he would not face legal problems when he returned to Iran.

Iran is among the most oppressive countries in terms of press freedom. Reporters Without Borders ranked Iran 176th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index for 2024./ REL
