The fall of Scholz, the German President sets the date of new elections

The German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, today ordered the dissolution of the Parliament and set new elections for February 23, after the dissolution of the government coalition led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Chancellor Scholz lost a vote of confidence on December 16 and is currently leading a minority government after the three-party "traffic light" coalition collapsed on November 6 following the sacking of the finance minister.

Under these circumstances, the leaders of the main parties agreed to announce early elections, which will be held on February 23, seven months ahead of schedule.

According to the German Constitution, the decision to dissolve Parliament and call elections rests with the president. Steinmeier had 21 days to make this decision. After the dissolution of the Parliament, elections must be held within 60 days./ CNA
