Syrian opposition forces enter Aleppo

Syrian opposition forces have entered Aleppo, Syria's second-largest city, after two car bombs exploded on November 29 and clashed with government forces west of the city, war monitor nl Syria said.

It is the first time the city has been attacked by opposition forces since 2016, when they were driven out of Aleppo's eastern neighborhoods following a military campaign in which Syrian government forces were backed by Russia, Iran and allied groups.

Thousands of opposition forces have advanced towards the city of Aleppo since the surprise offensive launched on Wednesday. They have taken control of several towns and villages.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war in Syria, said opposition forces detonated two car bombs in the western corner of the city on Friday.

An opposition insurgent commander has published a message on social media calling on the city's residents to cooperate as forces advance.

Turkey's state news agency Anadolu reported that opposition rebels entered central Aleppo on Friday.

Syrian state media reported earlier on Friday that shells fired by rebels fell on the student dormitory of Aleppo University, located in the center of the city, killing four people, including two students. Public transport in the city has also been affected as a result of the fighting.

Residents of Aleppo have reported hearing rocket attacks on the outskirts of the city.

Fighters have also advanced in the town of Sarakab, in the northwestern province of Idlib.

This week's advances are the biggest made by opposition factions, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS. This is the most intense fighting in northwest Syria since 2020, when government forces took control of areas previously under the control of opposition forces.

Syria's armed forces said the rebels had violated a 2019 agreement to reduce fighting in the area, which has been the opposition's last stronghold for years.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that since Wednesday, fighters on both sides have been killed. The insurgents have taken control of over 50 villages./ REL
