Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that five people have died and tens of thousands have been left without electricity in Ukraine after intense Russian missile and drone attacks overnight.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's neighbor Poland has scrambled fighter jets to ensure the security of Polish airspace, the Polish military confirmed. NATO aircraft have also been deployed, it said.
Four members of a family, including a 15-year-old girl, were killed in an attack in the village of Lapaivka, while attacks were concentrated in the nearby western city of Lviv.
Russia's Defense Ministry said it had successfully carried out a "massive" attack on Ukrainian military and infrastructure targets.
One person also died in Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky said Russia fired more than 50 missiles and about 500 attack drones. Lviv experienced several hours of strikes, which led to the suspension of public transport services and the disruption of electricity supplies.
The regions of Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa and Kirovohrad were also targeted, as well as Lviv and Zaporizhzhia, according to Zelensky./ CNA, translated by BBC
