The Czech Republic has been hit by a record wave of inflation, fueled by a sharp rise in energy prices. The discontent of many citizens is directed against the government and against the engagement in Ukraine.

Thousands demonstrated at the weekend in Prague's Wenzelsplatz under the slogan "Czech Republic against poverty". They waved flags and called for the withdrawal of the Liberal-Conservative government. They accuse the governing cabinet of Prime Minister Petr Fiala of not having taken enough measures against the increase in prices in the country. Demonstrators also criticized NATO and demanded the immediate cessation of military aid to Ukraine.

The protest action was organized by the new non-parliamentary party PRO. "We have gathered to position ourselves against poverty," said its chairman, Jindrich Rajchl. He said that he wants a government that "takes care of the Czech citizens in the first place".

The Czech Republic has been dealing with record inflation for a year, which is mainly related to the increase in the price of energy in the wake of the war in Ukraine. In February, inflation was 16.7 percent, almost twice as much as in Germany (8.7 percent)./ DW
