The United States believes that Russia is developing a nuclear weapon for use in space against satellites. The detonation of such a weapon could destroy everything from military communications to traffic services, a source familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he believed the Russian system included an explosive nuclear device placed in orbit.

President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia was opposed to deploying nuclear weapons in space, while his defense minister categorically denied reports that Russia was developing nuclear capabilities for use in space.

The White House and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment on the matter.

The news about Russia's possible development of space-based nuclear weapons came to light after the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, issued a statement warning of a "serious national security threat."

A White House spokesman said Thursday that the United States believes the system being developed by Russia would violate a treaty that prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction in space.

The 1967 treaty prohibits signatories, including Russia and the United States, from placing "in Earth orbit any object carrying nuclear weapons or any type of weapon of mass destruction."

US-Russia relations have been strained by a host of issues, including Moscow's aggression against Ukraine, which has sparked the biggest confrontation between the West and Russia since the 1962 crisis over the deployment of Russian missiles in Cuba.

The New York Times reported on Saturday, without citing sources, that a warning has been circulating in recent weeks from US spy agencies that Russia may be planning a new secret satellite launch for military purposes, and that the main question was whether it involved nuclear weapons. .

Bloomberg news agency reported on Tuesday that Russia may put a nuclear weapon or a test warhead into space as early as this year.

Bloomberg also cited unnamed sources as saying that the United States believes that Russia is not planning to detonate a bomb, but that there was a risk of an accidental detonation, which would disable many satellites.
