China is one of the most expensive places in the world to raise a child, a prominent Chinese institute said on Wednesday, detailing the time and opportunity costs for women who choose to have children in the country . 

The cost of raising a child to the age of 18 relative to GDP per capita is about 6.3 times higher in China compared to 2.08 times in Australia, 2.24 times in France, 4.11 times in the US and 4.26 times in Japan, it said. in a report from the Beijing Institute of Population Research.

Childrearing also leads to a reduction in women's hours of paid work and wage rates, while men's livelihoods remain largely unchanged.

The report comes as China's population fell for a second year in a row in 2023 with the number of new births at about half of what it was in 2016.

A growing number of women are choosing not to have children due to high childcare costs and an unwillingness to marry or put their careers on hold, while gender discrimination remains widespread. CNA
