Navalny's mother's appeal to Putin: Return my son's body

The mother of Alexei Navalny, the Putin critic who died in a Russian prison, has called on President Vladimir Putin to return his body.

In a video filmed outside the prison where he died on Friday, she said she had been trying to see the shame for five days but didn't even know where it was.

"I haven't been able to see him for five days, they are refusing to give me his body and they don't even say where he is," she says.

Meanwhile, Navalny's wife, Julia, asked the authorities not to stop his loved ones from saying goodbye.

The family has been told his body will not be released for two weeks. There has been no confirmation of the body's whereabouts from Russian authorities, while efforts to find it have been repeatedly called off.

Yulia Navalnaya has claimed that her husband's body was being held until traces of Novichok nerve agent poisoning have disappeared.

Navalny survived an attempt to kill him using poison in 2020.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the accusations "baseless and vulgar" but added that since Ms Navalnaya had only been widowed a few days earlier, he would not to comment further./ CNA
