The 'Epstein' Files/ Influence in Europe, from the political elite to

Files released by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) include 3.5 million documents, emails and other materials related to convicted sex trafficking financier Jeffrey Epstein. The documents reveal contacts and correspondence with prominent figures in the European political and royal elite.

The name of Norwegian Princess Mette-Marit appears in the latest documents, with hundreds of emails exchanged with Epstein between 2011 and 2014, years after his conviction for sex crimes in 2008.

In these emails, the princess used tones of intimacy, including expressions such as "dear/dear", and discussed personal topics and meetings.

After the release of these documents, Mette-Marit publicly apologized, saying she showed poor judgment in her contacts with Epstein and that it was “simply disgraceful.” She said she should have investigated his criminal background better.

The Norwegian Prime Minister has said the Princess showed poor judgment and must provide explanations for her contacts with Epstein.

The connection of this scandal to the Norwegian monarchy comes at a sensitive time, as the Princess's son, Marius Borg Hoiby, is facing a serious criminal trial on charges of rape and violence.

The publication of the emails has sparked widespread debate in Norway and Europe about the ethics and responsibilities of public figures associated with people with documented criminal backgrounds.

Epstein's documents include other types of influence in Europe, including politicians, diplomatic figures and well-known names in society, raising questions about his influence on elites and their social connections.

Some of this material shows the global reach of Epstein's contacts, including figures in the UK and other European countries./CNA
