Solar business growth, photovoltaic energy reaches 7.8% of net production

Photovoltaic plants connected to the transmission and distribution network, as well as those that are part of the Free Market Supplier, produced around 370 thousand MWh of energy in the first eight months of this year.

This amount constitutes 7.8 percent of the total net energy production in the country, which recorded 4.7 million MWh.

Despite the increasing interest in photovoltaics and the considerable number of applications that are in various institutional stages, their overall weight still remains small in the sector, indicating that diversification will require more time.

The largest photovoltaic producers in the country are Karavastaja and Voltalias, several small plants with a capacity of 20 MW, as well as a larger number of plants with a capacity of up to 2 MW, which sell energy at a price approved by the ERE.

Official data on the sector's performance for the period January-August, published by the Energy Regulatory Authority (ERE), reflect a not very favorable water situation for the country, where a significant portion of consumption is met by purchases on the free market.

The country's energy consumption has reached 5.54 million MWh, while the Albanian Electric Power Corporation (KESH) alone has supplied the Free Market Supplier (FTL) with 3.5 million MWh of energy, representing 63 percent of the country's total consumption. KESH itself, of the amount of energy it has provided to the FTL, has secured at least 22 percent in the free market, which indicates a significant number of purchases in the conditions of a not-at-all favorable hydrological year.

The rest of the production is divided between independent energy producers, which are those with a capacity of over 15 MW, and priority producers, such as HPPs with a capacity of up to 15 MW, who sell the energy to FTL based on a fixed price agreement, which is currently 10 lek/kWh./ ??Monitor Magazine
