The Viroi Bridge will undergo construction from scratch as part of the project that the Albanian government has with the World Bank where the latter has made available 100 million dollars for a project dedicated to bridges.
A few days ago, the Albanian Road Authority announced that it is already waiting for closed offers from companies interested in participating in this competitive procedure, leaving March 20 as the deadline.
In a technical document published earlier, ARRSH underlined that the area, where the facility is proposed, is positioned in the north in relation to the center of the city of Gjirokastra, being a segment of the national road Gjirokastër-Tepelena. The object is part of the territory administered by the Municipality of Gjirokastra.
"The implementation project envisages that the entire track will run parallel to the existing road, on its eastern side (from the Drino river side), leaving the existing bridge in operation as a panoramic promenade around the lake," the technical report said.
The project also envisages the transition from a category C road to C2 with a lane width of 2 x 3.5 meters. On the other hand, it is required that the new facility guarantees the non-flooding of floodwaters with security suitable for this category of road.
The project for the bridges began to be negotiated a few years ago with the World Bank, taking into account the needs and the emergency for intervention in several works of this nature throughout the country. The project document at the time specified that 80 priority bridges (with a traffic flow of 100 to 2,500 vehicles per day) and culverts would require intervention within the next seven years.
"Bridges and canals under priority roads will first be those with the highest socio-economic importance due to their location along the main economic corridors or connecting the population in need with public services, workplaces or market centers .
Secondly, there will be bridges where there is weakness and risk due to their deteriorating structural conditions or located in areas that are occasionally affected by natural disasters or climate changes.
Thirdly, there will be those bridges that may need immediate intervention in the seven-year time frame when the project will be implemented", said the Bank's report./Monitor
