ERE: Customers connected to 6 kV must take measures to enter the free market

Businesses connected to 6 kilovolt voltage will have to secure their own energy on the free market from a private supplier.

After a series of announcements from companies that are part of the OSHEE Group, the Energy Regulatory Authority also requested that the latter take measures to adapt to this final stage of liberalization.

"From January 1, 2026, customers connected at the 6 kV voltage level, who also meet the legal and technical criteria to enter the liberalized electricity supply market, are obliged to find their supplier in the free market.

Regarding the above, we bring to the attention of all consumers belonging to this category, but also any other consumer who has met the criteria for entering the free energy market, to take measures to find and contract their supplier from the list of suppliers licensed by the ERE in this activity," the Entity's announcement states.

The latter indicates that licensed suppliers can be found on its website, as well as the modalities for contacting and contracting them.

"We also bring to your attention that, on the PCT (Price Comparison Tool) price comparison platform, built by ERE https://pct.ere.gov.al/, you can search and find the best supply offers for the category to which you belong," ERE underlines.

The regulator underlines that all consumers who have met the criteria for entering the free market and who have not been able to contract a supplier themselves or have lost their supplier, may benefit from supply through the "Supplier of Last Resort" which is a supplier designated in accordance with the provisions of the electricity sector law, and which offers for a limited period of time (60 days) the supply service, under regulated conditions.

Meanwhile, in any case, entities can change their supplier free of charge as this is a right recognized by law.

The liberalization process began in 2018 when businesses connected to 35 kV voltage were released to the free market. Since then, liberalization has proceeded in phases, subsequently releasing businesses connected to 20 kilovolt voltage and then those connected to 10 kilovolt voltage.

In this final phase, there are around 2,300 verified entities at 6 kilovolt voltage who will enter the free market, while another part is in the verification phase due to the obligations they have towards the current supplier./monitor
