Murder of Martin Cani/ Appeal partially reopens case

The Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction has decided to partially reopen the trial following an appeal filed by the alleged perpetrator of the incident. The panel has deemed it necessary to prepare a new psychological report for the alleged perpetrator, MP, and the injured person, LM.

To carry out this procedure, the court has appointed two psychologists who will contact the two minors to assess their current situation.

This new report is expected to be presented at the next session, which is scheduled to be held on July 1.

The serious incident was recorded on November 18, 2024, near the 9-year-old school "Fan Noli" in the capital. During this tragic incident, minor Martin Cani lost his life from stabbings, while his friend, LM, was injured. According to investigations conducted by the prosecution, the 15-year-old perpetrator appears to have acted alone.

The Court of First Instance in Tirana issued its decision on December 9, 2025, declaring the 15-year-old guilty of murder in other qualifying circumstances, as well as attempted murder.

For both of these charges, 22 years of imprisonment were initially requested, but due to the procedure of combining sentences, the perpetrator was ultimately sentenced to 16 years in prison.
