Details from the preliminary hearing at the Criminal Court against Ilir Beqaj are revealed.

It is learned that Beqaj has denied the accusations against him of passive corruption, linking it to the determination of the title of the position he held. 

The hearing against Ilir Beqaj at the Criminal Court of Kosovo is taking place as he faces charges of stealing EU funds while he was running the SASPAK agency.

"Honorable Court,

Although this session is being held behind closed doors, I would like to make the following statement:

In the indictment, dated February 17, 2025, I am also accused of the offense of passive corruption of a senior official for actions committed in my capacity as Director General of SASPAC.

On September 6, 2023, criminal proceedings 190/2023 were registered for the criminal offense of passive corruption of a public official. The criminal offense was further reclassified.

The decision to impose the measure in the first instance of the GJKKO on July 6, 2024 states that, and also provides justification for, the General Director of SASPAC is not a senior official.

Even in the appeal decision of the GJKKO, regarding the assessment of the security measure on August 7, 2024, it is written that, and it is also justified why, the General Director of SASPAC is not a senior official.

"Who is a high-ranking official according to the Constitution and the Code of Criminal Procedure is very clear. The list of subjects is exhaustive. I was very surprised by this type of accusation. I expected the court confrontation," Beqaj is reported to have said. /CNA
