"Place full of chemicals"/ Pedagogue: The situation in the Elbasan

Pedagogue Romeo Hanxhari today described the situation in the Elbasan landfill as an environmental crime.  

Invited to the show 'Log,' the lecturer stated that the high level of toxins and chemicals in this area makes it a carcinogenic and dangerous dumping ground for humans.

"The one in Elbasan that caught fire cannot be called a landfill. It is not a landfill. If it is called a landfill, it must be sanitized, organized with isolated cells. The production of methane must be controlled, because methane causes fires. It can be called a dumping ground. There are gas cylinders scattered there, and it cannot be controlled with a drone. Methane is created there, because there is no oxygen.

You are giving aspirin to a cancer patient. The patient is sick with cancer, it is metaphorical cancer for the landfill, but not metaphorical, for those who live in Tirana, Elbasan, for those who produce vegetables, who get dioxin. It is a very problematic situation. It is an environmental crime, which can also be called a state environmental crime, it is called 'karma'. We have lied to the people that we are supposedly treating them. Dioxins are released and taken in through water or through breathing, they cause cancer, genetic deformities.

"All those who worked have been exposed. In Shijak, waste is burned in a place that has not even been formalized by the state. This situation is all over Albania, because no importance has been given to waste treatment," said Hanxhari. /CNA
